VICTORIA, May 22—The Vancouver Capilanos came from behind an imposing deficit during the first game or their Western International League baseball double header hero Saturday to break loose for 16 runs in the last three innings and a 19-10 victory over the Victoria Tyees.
More than 2,000 fans saw the Capilanos held in check for six innings by Mike Kanshin as the Tyees powdered Tom Lovrich to build up a 9-3 margin. The Caps got two back in the seventh, then really unloaded in the eighth.
In the next two innings, the Vancouver squad hit four home runs, a double and 10 singles and got six bases on balls as they batted four Victoria pitchers out of the box.

VICTORIA [Colonist, May 23]—Victoria Tyees scored 19 runs in two WIL games at Royal Athletic Park yesterday, but they didn’t even come close as the Vancouver Capilanos showed close to 3,000 Victoria baseball fans that reports of their prowess at the plate were no myths.
Breaking loose for 16 runs in the last three innings of the afternoon game, the Caps overcame a 9-3 Tyee lead to come out on top, 19-10. Then they broke open the night game with six runs in the seventh to go on for a 13-9 triumph.
MURDERERS’ ROW
In sweeping the split double-header to win the series, 3-1, the Caps hit seven home runs, five in the afternoon, and made it a total of 32 hits in completely demolishing the Victoria pitching staff. In four games, the Caps scored 44 runs on 59 hits although held to two runs and five hits by Bob Drilling Friday night, and slammed out 10 home runs, two triples and seven doubles.
Third-baseman Ken Richardson, who has been around diamonds about as long as Satchell Paige, was the chief wrecker yesterday. He hit two home runs in the first game and one in the finale to give him four for the series.
Bob Wellman, the big first baseman who ended the series with 11 hits in 22 trips, had two home runs and four doubles while K. Chorlton boosted his batting mark with 10 hits in 21 trips.
NOT GOOD ENOUGH
Against those figures, the solid Victoria showing of 31 runs and 47 hits for the series didn’t look too healthy. The Tyees hit only three home runs and that was the big difference. Their over-the-fence blows plated only four runners while the Caps scored 15 with their four-masters.
Mike Kanshin gave the Caps quite a battle until he tired in the first game. The Tyees, finding Tom Lovrich, late of the Seattle Rainiers, no puzzle, banged away to take a safe-looking six-run lead in the first six innings.
But the Caps got two back in the seventh, then Dick Greco lofted one over the centre-field fence with two runners on in the eighth and it was 9-8 with Bill Bottler called in to stop it there.
Bottler could only get one man out before he was lifted for Berlyn Hodges with four hits, including home runs by Richardson and Arnie Hallgren, scoring four runs.
LAKE ENDS IT
Hodges got the last man out in the eighth but he couldn’t get one out in the ninth after Marv Williams greeted him with the Caps’ fifth home run. Neither could Bob Moen and shortstop Eddie Lake had to be called in to do the pitching. He retired the side by striking out Wellman and Hallgren with the bases loaded after walking in two men.
The Caps found Hal Flinn only a minor problem in the night game as they built up a 6-1 lead after six turns at the plate. The Tyees rallied in their half of the sixth to make it 6-5 but the Caps, handled yesterday by catcher Nick Pesut in the absence of manager Bill Brenner, made it safe in the seventh.
A two-run homer by Wellman started it and before Prior could get the side out, six runs were across and it was 12-5. Tyees threatened in the ninth but could do no better than two runs each time and it wasn’t near enough.

SPOKANE [Tri-City Herald, May 22]—Win, lose or draw in the split doubleheader at Spokane today, the Tri-City Braves will return from the road trip for the opening game with Salem Monday with at least a .500 record on the jaunt abroad.
The Braves won two Saturday from Spokane, 12-7 in the afternoon game, snd 7-3 in the second game.
The total is exactly double the number they won when they played eight games the last time on the road.
Dale Bloom, who relieved starter Don Robertson in the fourth inning of the first gome won his second against one loss and Dale Thomason, who started the second game, won his first against one loss.
Jess Dobernic, relief pitcher who has had his troubles earlier, showed he was the game-saver of old in the second game. Taking over for Thomason in the eighth with one man on and one away, Dobernic got pinch-hitter Ed Sack to hit into a double play to end the inning.
In the ninth, protecting the four-run lead, Dobernic put the next three batters down in order.
Thomason pitched steady ball up until the eighth. But the frequency of double plays pulled him out of some holes. One came in the second inning when a walk, a hit and an error loaded the bases. Then the twin killing going from Len Tran to Dick Watson to Vic Buccola ended the inning. In the bottom of the eighth, Charlie Ruddock worked Thomason for a walk. Bob Donkersley then followed with a homer. After another walk, Thomason was taken out.
Tri-City scored two runs in the third on two walks, a hit and a sacrifice fly. In the fifth, Bob Moniz, who hit three for five, drove in Terry Carroll and Bob McGuire for two more runs.
The Braves scored a lone run in the seventh when Tran doubled and McGuire singled him home. In the bottom of the eighth, starting pitcher John Anderson was taken out for Sack and Virgil Giovannoni took over. In the top of the ninth, Giavannoni walked Buccola who moved to second on a sacrifice by Tran.
Jack Warren was intentionally walked and Moniz popped out. Sam Kanelos singled scoring Buccola and Warren moved to third on the play. Kanelos went to second.
McGuire was then intentionally walked to fill the sacks and Dick Watson singled Warren home.
In the first game, the Braves pounded 18 hits off four Spokane pitchers including two doubles by Vic Buccola.
The scoring started slowly enough but hit its peak in the fourth inning. Tri-City was trailing 2-1 when it started but had an 7-2 lead at the end of the top half.
Spokane came back for five runs in the bottom half and drove pitcher Robertson from the mound.

Sheridan in Line-Up For Holiday Games
[Victoria Colonist, May 23, 1954]
Neil Sheridan, veteran ex-Coast League slugger, will be in the line-up tomorrow and batting in the clean-up slot when Victoria Tyees meet Calgary Stampeders in a split double-header at Royal Athletic Park.
Sheridan, who terrorized Coast League pitchers for years and only last season hit .293 in 170 games with Sacramento while clouting 13 home runs and 43 doubles, agreed to terms yesterday. He is scheduled to arrive by air today.
PEREZ TO SECOND
His acquisition has forced Art Seguso out of the line-up, at least temporarily, and brought hard-hitting Tom Perez into the infield. Sheridan will take over in centrefield, where Perez has been playing, while Perez will move in at second base, his normal position.
That moves Steve Mesner back to third, where manager Don Pries has been playing the past two week. Pries will go back to first, replacing Seguso.
The changes were expected inasmuch as Joe Joshua has been hitting the ball hard of late and boosted his average well over .300 to earn his spot in left field. Dain Clay, who snapped out of a batting slump with five hits yesterday, remains in right field.
Pries announced last night that Clay would lead off, with Mesner batting second and Perez third. Eddie Lake, who has been hitting fourth, is in fifth spot in the batting order, followed by Joshua, Pries, catcher Milt Martin and the pitcher.
Bill Bottler and probably Bill Prior will pitch for the Tyees tomorrow, with Bob Drilling scheduled to go in Tuesday night’s game. The Tyees get a day off Wednesday while Glasgow Rangers play Victoria in an international soccer match.
